Zip lines
The most‑requested feature we build, and the most‑engineered.
A backyard zip line is a cable, two anchors, a trolley, a seat and a brake. Every one of those has to be right, and the yard has to have the run for it. Here's what we look for.
Run and slope
A satisfying ride needs 50 to 100 feet of run and a modest drop, usually a few feet over the length. Too steep and the rider arrives too fast; too flat and they stop halfway. We measure the actual grade and set the cable sag so the ride ends where it should, with the brake doing a little, not everything.
Anchors
Engineered posts on footings, or a healthy tree with proper hardware and an arborist's sign-off. Cable tension on a loaded zip line is high; anchors are sized for it with a margin, not for "seems solid."
The stop
A spring brake on the cable plus a bumper at the end, with the landing zone surfaced like a playground use zone. We design for the rider's feet to touch down on soft material a few feet before the stop. Seats for younger kids; trapeze bars for older ones who've earned it.
Clearance
Nothing within reach on either side of the ride path. No branches, no fence, no siblings. The zip line often defines where everything else goes in the yard, so we design it first.
Age
Zip lines are for kids who can hold on and understand the stop, which in our experience is usually 6 or 7 and up, and always with a grown-up watching. A lower, shorter "starter" line with a seat can work for younger kids. We'll be honest about which line fits your kids right now, and how to upgrade it later.

Climbing and bouldering walls
Panels of 8 to 10 feet with bolt-on holds you can rearrange. Start with big, easy holds and a gentle angle; add small crimps and an overhang as they improve. Built into a play tower, the side of a treehouse, a fence line, or freestanding with a mat zone at the base.
Ninja courses
A line of obstacles: slackline, monkey bars, rings, a cargo net, a rope climb, a warped wall. Modular beam systems let you swap obstacles seasonally. The kids time each other and it becomes a sport.
Rope bridges
Between a treehouse and a tower, or between two low platforms for the little kids. The wobble is the point. Net sides, a low height, and something soft underneath.
Boulder fields
Real Colorado stone, set into the grade, sized from step-up boulders for toddlers to 4-foot scrambles for big kids. They double as landscape, seating and the edge of a play creek. No maintenance, ever.
Balance and obstacle trails
Log beams, stepping pods, a low slackline, a tunnel through a berm, looped through the planting. A course for the 3-to-7 crowd that reads as a garden path.
Climbing towers
A tall, narrow structure with multiple routes up: net, wall, pole, ladder. A lookout on top. The big-kid centerpiece that a play tower grows into.

How much room does a zip line need?
A straight run of at least 50 feet is where it starts to feel like a ride, with 6 to 8 feet of clear width the whole way and a landing zone at the end. Many suburban lots have a diagonal that works. If yours doesn't, a climbing tower and ninja line deliver a similar thrill in a smaller footprint.
Are these features safe?
They involve height, speed and real challenge, which is the point and also the risk. We design use zones, surfacing, hardware and anchors with published playground guidance and manufacturer specifications in mind, and we're candid about which features are for which ages. Adventure play needs supervision, especially early on. We'd rather say that plainly than sell a "worry-free" zip line, because that doesn't exist.
Can you make it harder later?
That's how we design it. Holds move. Obstacles swap. A zip seat becomes a bar. A climbing wall angle can be adjusted on some systems. Adventure features are the easiest part of a KidScape to grow with the kid.
